Liability Myth-Busting
A common concern among providers is that patient recordings will increase liability risk or lead to "gotcha" moments. However, the evidence suggests the opposite: recordings protect good medicine.
A major study followed 15,254 patients who recorded their clinic visits. Over a three-year period, there were zero lawsuits or paid claims related to the recordings.[1]
Recordings provide an objective record of the encounter, documenting that informed consent was obtained and that instructions were clearly communicated. In many cases, this documentation can be exculpatory.
Improved Adherence & Outcomes
The primary barrier to adherence is often a lack of retention. Patients are overwhelmed by information during a visit.
The Memory Gap
Research shows that patients forget 40-80% of medical information immediately after leaving the clinic. Of what they do remember, nearly half is incorrect.[2]
By allowing patients to record and receive an AI-generated summary, you ensure they have a permanent, accurate reference for your instructions. This leads to:
- Better medication adherence
- Fewer errors in post-procedure care
- Increased patient engagement and trust[3]
Workflow Friendly
LumiMD is a passive tool for patients. It requires zero changes to your existing workflow:
- No new software for you or your staff to learn.
- No integration with your EHR required.
- No additional time spent on data entry.
Patients simply open the app, press record, and the AI handles the rest. You focus on the patient, not the technology.
Privacy & Control
LumiMD is designed as a personal health tool, not a broadcasting platform.
We explicitly educate patients that these recordings are for their personal use and private sharing with caregivers only—not for posting on social media.
All data is end-to-end encrypted, HIPAA-compliant, and owned solely by the patient.
What Patients Are Told to Say
We coach patients to inform you before recording. Here's the script we recommend:
"I'd like to record our conversation today using an app called LumiMD. It creates a summary for me so I can remember your instructions. The recording stays private and is only for my personal use. Is that okay with you?"
Patients are encouraged to respect your decision. If you'd prefer they not record, they will comply. Our goal is to support respectful, informed conversations—not to create conflict.
Practice Efficiency
When patients have a recording or summary to refer back to, they are less likely to call the office for clarification on simple questions like "How many times a day do I take this?" or "When is my follow-up?"
LumiMD handles the note-taking for the patient, allowing them to be more present and focused during the consultation, rather than distracted by trying to write everything down.
